A woman had to drag her bedridden mother to a bank in India to withdraw the old lady’s pension after the bank demanded for a physical verification.
The 70-year-old daughter, Gunja Dei, dragged her mother Labhe Baghel, 120, on a cot all the way to the bank in early June this year in Naupada district of Odisha.
According to a report, Utkal Grameen Financial institution refused to release the pension of the centenarian amounting to Rs 1,500 without the physical verification of the receiver.
The daughter, who is an elderly herself, had to literally drag her mother to the bank.
When the mother and daughter arrived from the bank, the bank immediately released the money.
Meanwhile, many residents saw the incident of the daughter dragging her mother. It went viral on Twitter and received 1,400 likes and 1,100 shares.
Upon learning about it, local government officials sent a letter to the bank. They demanded for a strict action specifically to those officials involved in the incident.
Later on, the Chief Secretary of Odisha required all banks in the country to provide door-to-door service to elderly citizens.
