US Citizen Charged of Trying to Help North Korea

A US citizen who is a computer researcher appears in federal court in Los Angeles on Monday. Accused of advising North Korea on how to use cryptocurrency to avoid sanctions. This was according to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Virgil Griffith, age 36, lives in Singapore. Arrested last week at the Los Angeles International Airport. And then a criminal complaint against him filed on Friday.

He is a research scientist in the Ethereum Foundation, it is a Swiss-based cryptocurrency platform. But, Ethereum told CNN Business it did not approve or support Griffith’s travel to North Korea.

Further, Griffith accused of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by traveling to North Korea. According to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
