Doctors removed a melon-sized hairball from a woman’s stomach in a surgery.
The unnamed 19-year-old teenager from a rare psychiatric disorder causing her to eat things that are not food, a report said.
Experts said the consequences of the disorder are dangerous, and that person may experience severe ulcers and erosions in the stomach.
According to an article, the girl has been secretly eating her own hair since she was 16. However, it was only until she started vomiting and her noticeable weight loss concerned her parents.
Further, her parents observed a visible lump on her stomach.
After experiencing severe pain from her stomach, the woman was brought to a nearby hospital. The attending doctors discovered a mass taking up 80 percent of her stomach.
During the surgery, doctors were surprised to pull out a huge lump of hair from her belly weighing 3.3lbs (1.5kg).
The girl was diagnosed with trichophagia – a condition that causes people to compulsively eat their own hair.
Further, the officials said they are doing their best to rest awareness about her condition and it does bring any bad omen.
The surgeon said they had to get the lump in one go. Removing the hair piece by piece to keep strands of hair from falling. This may lead to further complications.
She is currently recovering and feeling happier after the surgery.
