Star Wars is one of the most popular film franchises of all time.
As it stands, it spans 5 decades of entertainment excellence. Throughout its run, it has produced 8 mainline films and 2 spin-offs films. In addition, it has produced a bunch of animated series, published materials, and theme park rides, among others.
With the impending release of The Rise of Skywalker this December 2019, Disney is now looking beyond the horizon. Steering the franchise beyond is Rian Johnson. Rian Johnson previously held the mantle for The Last Jedi. He will be at the helm of the 4th Star Wars Trilogy, consisting of Episodes 10 to 12.
According to reports, the next set of films will no longer include characters whom we’ve come to know. As such, heroes such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Rey, and Kylo Ren will most likely not be trekking the galaxy anymore. Furthermore, he mentioned that the upcoming last episode will feature the closing of the Skywalker Saga. Thus pivoting the franchise to a greater scope.
No Plans Yet
Beyond the idea that the Skywalker Saga is ending, Rian Johnson tells us that they still have not much to work on. He confirms that the team is not in a hurry, and is still in the storyboarding phase. Additionally, he states that there’s still no solid story arc yet as to how the plot and setting of the new trilogy would look like. Quoting the director: “I think that the fun and challenging part of it is to dive in, figure out what’s exciting and then figure out what it’s going to be. “
Disney Pictures bought the entirety of the Lucasfilm estate for a whopping $4 Billion in 2012. This gave the studio the right to steer the franchise to further marketability and appeal to a younger audience.
Whatever it’s worth, the Star Wars faithful will still most definitely troop to the cinemas to see what’s in store for their beloved franchise.
