Tennis superstar Serena Williams beat out Maria Sharapova for a record-setting 19th consecutive time. During the first round of the 2019 US Open in New York, Williams edged out Sharapova in two sets, winning each 6-1, 6-1.
Sharapova last won against Serena Williams in 2004.
The two rivals have been in and out of the tennis scene for the past couple of years. However, their rivalry stands true to this day.
Serena Williams went back to the court in March 2018 after delivering her first baby. Unfortunately, multiple knee injuries and back problems have been hounding her since her return.
Similarly, Maria Sharapova had also just gotten back. After being tested positive for the illegal substance Meldonium, the anti-doping commission slapped a 15 months suspension to the tennis legend. She went back to the court in 2017 but was never the same again. This contest is her first time to face Serena Williams since the fateful Australian Open 2016. She went back to the court in 2017 but was never the same again. Currently, she is unseeded as she ranks 87th in the global rankings.
Tennis stars applaud the contest
Similarly, tennis stars applauded the contest. In attendance was Roger Federer. According to the Men’s tennis superstar, what transpired was a “fierce rivalry” between two legends. Apparently, their contemporaries on the court consider the two ladies to be at their best when facing each other in a sort of a complementary way.
The US Open continues.
