Residents in a province in Thailand remained indoors as gang of monkeys fight in the streets became more aggressive, The Guardian reported.
Monkeys in Lopburi increasingly become supercharged as their food is replaced with junk food instead of bananas.
These animals used to enjoy a steady supply of bananas from tourists. It dwindled because of the ongoing lockdowns in and out of the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some businesses were even forced to close, while others have sought desperate measures to keep the monkeys at bay. Monkeys usually do theft and vandalism in the area.
“I have this soft-toy crocodile in front of my shop to scare them away. I’ve got a tiger’s head as well. But you still have to shoo them away with a stick,” a shop owner said in an interview.
Residents thought of feeding the monkeys to prevent clashes. However, the locals observed that the sugary diet of cereal and sweets just fueled their aggressiveness and their sex lives.
Meanwhile, residents of the 13th century city have been complaining as the smell becomes unbearable when it rains as excrements of the primates are everywhere.
A resident even said, “We live in a cage, but the monkeys live outside.”
The government plans to implement a sterilization campaign after the change of attitude among the animals since the pandemic broke out.
