Short’s and Aquabear, the popular northern Michigan craft brewery, delivered six crates of beer by seaplane earlier this month to six Antrim County area families that lived on waterfront properties.
Aquabear, formally known as Steve Smith, proposed in 2018 to Short to expand his already bustling beer business by providing an airplane delivery.
“He (Smith) likes to get his airplane out, fly it around and have fun bouncing around the lake,” Short said in an interview. “I was like ‘Alright cool, let’s put it together.’”
During the strict lockdown in the area, the two accidentally made six separate neighborly get-togethers.
A customer greeted the delivery men by the Torch Lake. When his neighbors saw him, they began hosting a barbeque party. Meanwhile, Short brought out some cookies.
“Never thought a seaplane would ever be in front of my house and I never thought it was bringing me beer,” a customer shared. “So, this was definitely a first.”
Later on, the neighbors watched in amazement the departure of the plane taxi. It disappeared beyond the trees, then took off to the east going to the brewery’s bottling facility in Elk Rapids.
“This is a highlight of our summer, absolutely,” the customer said. “To see a seaplane come in right to your front step and deliver beer and hop off. I mean this was just phenomenal.”
