Joker receives an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience during its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last weekend.
According to reports, the film earned wild praise for its storyline, cinematography, and a new take on the character. Similarly, notable film site IGN gave it’s first 10/10 rating for 2019 to said film. In a tweet, by Terri Schwartz, she mentions that she hasn’t “stopped thinking about it”.
In addition, film critics praise the excellent performance of Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character. Considering the bar that Health Ledger previously set on doing Joker, Phoenix seems to have set the bar higher based on current reports out of Venice.
With a modest film production budget of $55 million, Joker is expected to rake in massive sums and profits. Notably, it only needs to earn $190-200 million to break even. And with the reviews and praises it currently receives, projections estimate the film would hit the $1 billion mark towards its theatrical run.
Joker: Origin Story?
According to reports, the film looks to be an origin story loosely based on the critically-acclaimed comics “The Killing Joke”. Particularly, both story arcs show Arthur as a mild-mannered man who just really had a series of problems and personal issues that ultimately led to his breaking. However, according to Director Todd Philips, while the comic book served as an inspiration, they didn’t solely rely on it. Although, it has been mentioned that the film company really wanted to deliver an origin story for the Joker.
Joker starts its run on October 4, 2019.
