Fast retailing Co. in early June started selling washable and fast-drying face masks at its Uniqlo stores in Japan. The masks sold out within hours.
Japan continues to follow strict measures of slowing down the spread of COVID-19 in the country, expecting the outbreak to last through summer.
The masks are in a pack of three, made of the same fabric with the Uniqlo’s Airism underwear products. The products, like the other items, are available in three sizes.
According to the retailer, the mask has three layers and includes a filter. It maintains efficacy even after being washed 20 times.
The masks cost 990 yen ($9.3). Meanwhile, purchases are only for one pack per size per person. The company plans on manufacturing 500,000 packs a week.
The massive demand among customers even minutes after the product debuted caused the website to crash.
Meanwhile, Uniqlo retail stores had to distribute tickets to purchase the mask as long queues formed even before the stores opened. By noon, stores do not already have available masks.
By 1:30 PM on that same day, Uniqlo also announced masks already ran out online.
Meanwhile, overseas customers cannot shop at the Uniqlo online store. Masks are currently available only for Japan. But will later on be sold abroad.
