Ewan McGregor confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the new Star Wars TV series. People last saw him play a role in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith.
The actor confirmed in a panel during the D23 Expo last week, and mentioned that “it feels nice to say”. Fans took this as a sign that they have something to look forward to. Filming will begin early next year. According to Producer Kathleen Kennedy, the scripts have already been green-lit by Disney executives. And preparations are on the way.
True to Star Wars’ details leak, however, a lot remains hidden in secrecy. Although, most signs seem to point towards the series being an origin story for the beloved Star Wars character. As such, the series may be focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s childhood and awakening to the Force.
Talks of a stand-alone Obi-Wan Kenobi film were halted following the dismal performance of last year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters.
The Star Wars Story films are a series of stand-alone films that connect individual storylines and arcs to the episodic titles. Since then, two Star Wars Story films have been released: The well-reviewed Rogue One, and the highly-criticized Solo. Reports say that had Solo performed well, a Kenobi film would have been greenlit. Unfortunately for the fans, we’ll have to make do with a TV series for now.
Kenobi is the third Star Wars TV series to be launched via Disney+. In production are The Mandalorian, and a series about Cassian Andor, one of the heroes in Rogue One.
All shows are set for successive releases from 2020 until 2021.
