The European Union (EU) is going to develop a plan on how their continent will produce their plastic wisely. They are targeting to clean the environment and stop the accumulation of plastic waste.
That’s why last January 16, 2018, the European Commission declared strategies on how to make their plastic packaging in Europe reusable or recyclable by 2030.
According to the EU, Europeans produce 27.5 million tons of plastic waste every year, and only 30% of it is collected for recycling.
Therefore, the commission will provide a 100-million-euro budget for researching and developing recyclable plastics resources, effective recycling procedures, and improved projects of plastic products.
In addition to that, the European Union aims to be halting ocean spoiling.
“New guidelines on harbor reception amenities will tackle sea-based maritime litter,
with procedures to guarantee that waste created on ships or collected at sea is not left behind but returned to land and sufficiently managed there,” they stated.
Moreover, the commission will phase out the single-use plastics such as straws and coffee cups by discovering ways to put a tax on it.
“In a perfect world, the proceeds of this tax will decline quickly, we have to check an impact valuation whether this is a maintainable system of income also for the EU’s funds,”Frans Timmermans, Vice President of European Union
