Have you ever experienced a sore throat but think there could be more to it like tonsillitis? Maybe you’ve noticed that your tonsils are swollen and there is something strange at the back of your throat. Those alarming symptoms with the sensation of something being stuck in your throat is a sign that you may have tonsil stones.
Alarming Symptoms of Tonsil Stones
The tonsil stones are formally known as tonsilloliths. It consists of mucus, dead cells and other fragments that are collected in the deep pockets of the tonsils.
Those components are gradually condensed into small, light-colored lumps.
The causes of these lumps of solidified material to appear is still unknown. But medical professionals believe that the bacteria in the mouth may have something to do with their formation.
Fortunately, tonsil stones don’t require any treatment. Most of the time, tonsilloliths don’t produce any symptoms. Some are small enough that you can remove it with a finger or the tip of your tongue.
However, larger stones may require some antibiotics or even surgery. That’s why it’s important to visit your doctor if you are suspecting that you have them.
Here are the six possible symptoms to watch when it comes to tonsil stones:
1. Bad Breath
Tonsil stones are known for attracting bacteria and giving off a decaying smell, causing halitosis, or bad breath.
2. Sore Throat
If you have tonsil stones, it will be painful just like having a sore throat. It can also cause coughing fits and in some cases, even choking.
3. Swollen Tonsils
Larger tonsilloliths often go together with tonsil infection, causing inflammation.
4. Difficulty Swallowing
Large and swelling stones may make it difficult for you to swallow depending on where they’re located.
The tonsils share nerve pathways with the ears. A tonsil stone that is close to the nerve could cause ear pain.
6. White Debris
Tonsil stones are solid and white lumps that can be seen at the back of the throat. Some even have a similar appearance to teeth.
